Beliefs

Open Door Nursery School is part of the Wyoming Presbyterian Church’s ministry to children, and our kids are exposed to concepts that the Church believes. The values will be kept simple and at a level the children can understand. All holidays will be discussed, with Christian holidays being celebrated. Open Door Nursery School believes the family is the most important influence in a child’s life, and therefore offers many opportunities for parental involvement. Children may be exposed to prayer, in the form of grace at snack time. Major Christian holidays are also discussed and celebrated. A Christmas program is held in the sanctuary each year which includes a musical performance by the children in the 3 and 4 year-old classes.

Staff

What sets Open Door apart is its teachers, the heart of the school. The majority of the teachers have been with us for over 15 years, which means they truly love being here. All classes are staffed with both teachers and teacher assistants. All are well qualified by both professional standards and teaching experience in early childhood education. Equally important, they are attuned to the varying needs of the developing preschool child. All teachers continue to grow with ongoing teacher enrichment.

Curriculum

Open Door has a play-based curriculum that integrates the introduction of academic skills. Each class is essentially broken into free-play (kitchen, dolls, trucks, playdoh, painting), story time, outside time, snack time and discussion/music time. The two year-old class follows themes such as forest creatures, sea life, and winter and utilizes many hands-on cooking activities. The three year-old classes go deep into traditional nursery rhymes to explore concepts including numbers and letters. The four year-old classes move into reading readiness and math exploration. A music teacher meets with each class separately once a week. A Spanish teacher meets with the four year-old classes once a week.

Class Structure

Two Year-Olds
A child must be 2 years old by March 15th to enroll in one of our 2½ year-old classes which meet twice weekly with an option for a third day on Wednesday. One class meets Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00-11:30 a.m. and the second class meets Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00-11:30 a.m. The option of adding Wednesday is a great opportunity for the child who is ready for more socialization. Class size is limited with 12 children per class.

The 2½ year-old "Bridge Program" starts mid-way through the year in the January term for those children who turn 2 years-old by July 15th of previous year. The "Bridge Program" meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Class size is limited with 12 children per class.

Three Year-Olds
A child must be 3 years-old by October 1st to enroll in one of our 3 year-old classes. There are two 3 year-old classes this year with three-, four- or five-day options available from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Class size is limited with 17 children per class.

Four Year-Olds
A child must be 4 years-old by October 1st to enroll in one of our 4 year-old classes. It is a five day program that runs Monday through Friday either in the mornings or afternoons. Class size is limited with 17 children per class.

Lunch Bunch
This is an extended day option for our three and four year-old children where they socialize, play and have lunch together. There is no true instruction during this time as it is exclusively a time for them to interact and have fun. Each Lunch Bunch class is led by two teacher or teacher assistants. If your child is enrolled in a morning class, they stay until 1 p.m. If your child is enrolled in an afternoon class, their day starts earlier at 11:30 a.m. Parents must provide lunch. Lunch Bunch is available as many days as your child attends school.

Play Spaces

Physical play is a key component each day at Open Door. Children go outside every day to an enclosed, recently-updated playground with many ride-on toys, houses, slides, a sandbox, etc. If the weather doesn't allow for outside time, they play inside in a space called “The Big Room” with the same toys, ride-ons, etc.

Parental Involvement

There are many parental involvement opportunities like bringing snacks, helping for a day in 3's and 4's classes, or sharing a story or talent with your child's class. School parents make up the Parent Committee, and there is a class parent who organizes events and community involvement for each class.
